Discovery of gold on his land brought disaster to Sutter. In the process of building a water-powered sawmill, a carpenter named James W.Marshall found flakes of gold in a streambed (January 24,1848). The two men tried to keep the find a secret, but the news leaked out. Workers deserted the colony.
